Scope and Contents

Commission on Stewardship. This collection consists of materials from both the Committee on Stewardship (1939-1950) and the Commission on Stewardship (1950-1962). Housed in one 5" box, the collection includes minutes, financial records, publications, and files on various programs instituted by the Committee and the Commission.

Biographical / Historical

The Committee on Stewarship was established in 1939 under the General Council and administered by the Secretary of the Church. In September 1947 the General Council authorized hiring a part-time executive secretary and Rev. James W. Bright, pastor of Ascension E & R Church in Norristown, PA was appointed to fill that position serving 1/4 time, the remaining 3/4 time as executive secretary of the Commission on Evangelism. In 1957 Dr. Bright accepted the full-time position as executive secretary of the Commission on Evangelism and Rev. Paul E. Strauch was called to serve as the first full-time executive secretary of the Commission on Stewardship serving in that capacity until the final formation of the Stewardship Commission of the United Church of Christ in 1962.
