Biographical / Historical

This union church was established as early as 1731 as evidenced by baptismal entries in the Lutheran record book, although the children were baptized by Reformed pastor, John Peter Mueller. A log structure was built about 1732 and replaced by a stone structure with a brick or tile floor in 1750, followed by another stone building in 1847. This structure was demolished in 1938 to make way for a new building dedicated in 1939. The Reformed congregation was served by a succession of relatively short pastorates (six years or less) until John Christopher Gobrecht served from 1770 to 1779. The longest pastorate was that of Daniel Hertz from 1822 to 1867 followed by Stephen Schweitzer from 1871 to 1914. The union church was dissolved in 1967 with the Lutherans purchasing the Reformed portion of the property and the Reformed (UCC) congregation merging with St. Paul's UCC, Adamstown, PA. and forming a new church, Peace UCC in Denver (Schwartzville), PA.
