Biographical / Historical

St. John's Church was founded in 1791 as a union church (Reformed and Lutheran). Although not confirmed in any sources, it seems that a building, probably a log structure was built in 1793. The current building was constructed in 1805 with the front entrance and tower added in 1893. In addition to the Reformed and Lutheran congregations, at various times both Baptist and Episcopal congregations also used the building for worship. The Reformed congregation was part of the Allegheny Charge which consisted of: Robeson Reformed Church (Plowville), Allegheny Reformed Church (Alleghenyville), Wyomissing Reformed church (Gouglersville) and St. John's Reformed Church (Gibraltar), with Christ (Yocums) Reformed Church (Grill) added in 1955. In 1956 the Robeson Reformed Church was dissolved. In 1959 the Allegheny and Wyomissing congregations formed a two-part charge while Gibraltar and Grill formed a second two-point charge. The Gibraltar-Grill Charge was dissolved in 1966. In 1962 the Gibraltar Reformed and Lutheran congregations voted dissolve the union with the Lutheran congregation constructing their own building in Gibraltar. The UCC congregation continues to worship in the 1805 structure. pastors include: 1819-1825 William Pauli 1825-1826 Charles A.
