Biographical / Historical
Reformed people were living in and around Wallacetown, as Waynesboro was called from 1750 to 1797, and attended Salem Church. Occasionally the pastor would come to town and hold services in the schoolhouse. In 1808 the Presbyterians, Reformed and Lutheran came together to build a church to be used jointly by all three denominations. Construction was completed in 1818 and named Christ Union Church. The Reformed congregation was organized by Rev. Frederick A. School on June 21, 1818 with 48 people taking communion. A split occurred in 1826 over use of English in the services, the German only group building their own church and naming it Salem's German Evangelical Reformed Church in Waynesburg. Even then, there was a growing sentiment for English language services and with the coming of Rev. George Glessner in 1831 services alternated between German and English until 1835 when English began to used exclusively. The log structure was replaced by a brick building in 1833 which was added to in 1839. A new Gothic-style structure was built in 1871 and the church renamed Trinity Reformed Church. An educational building was dedicated and a parsonage built in 1950. Extensive renovations to the 1871 building were carried out in 1952.
