Biographical / Historical

The Shrewsbury Charge was constituted prior to 1825. In 1825, the charge consisted of nine congregations: Steltz's, Shrewsbury, Sadler's, Fissels, Schuster's, Blymeyer's, Stabler's, Frey's and Stehley's. In 1833, Blymeyer's detached from the charge. Between 1836 and 1850, Sadler's, Frey's and Stabler's detached from the charge. Around 1895, Glen Rock and New Freedom were added. In 1895, Fissel's, Glen Rock and Shuster's constituted a charge and Sadler's, previously detached in 1845, was added to the Shrewsbury charge. The Shrewbury charge then consisted of Steltz's, New Freedom, Shrewsbury and Sadler's; only two of the original nine congregations remained. Pastors: Adam Ettinger 1803-1810, Henry Fries 1810-1813, Frederick Scholl 1813-1818, Henry Hobliston 1819-1825, Jacob Mair 1825-1833, John Foersch 1833-1836, John Reinecke 1836-1850, E.N. Reinecke 1850-1853, Daniel Gring 1853-1880, Alfred Dreisbach 1881-1895, Hiriam Hillegass 1895-1907, Amandus Herbst 1907-1924, Charles M Mitzell 1924-1947. Steltz's congregation was organized in 1794 and has always been a part of the Shrewsbury Charge. Fissel's congregation was organized in 1783 and was detached from the Shrewsbury Charge in 1895 to form the Glen Rock Charge. Pastors: Gurney Weber, Israel Leiby and Samuel Roeder. In 1997, Jerusalem (Fissel's) UCC and Jerusalem (Fissel's) Lutheran consolidated to become New Hope (Fissel's) UCC. Shuster's congregation was organized in 1763. It has been known by the following names Friedensaal Kirche, Yellow Church and St. Peter's. Pastors: Rev. Kershner, Lucas Raus 1770-1787 and Augustus Reutz. After 1895, the pastors were Gurney Weber, Israel Leiby and S.M. Roeder. The Sadler's congregation was organized in 1791 and remained a part of the Shrewsbury Charge until 1845 when it detached and became a part of the Windsor Charge. In 1895, Sadler's was again added to the Shrewsbury Charge. Pastors: William Vanderslool 1845-1875, Henry Rahauser 1875-1882, Pharon Snyder 1882-1895. Bleimeyer's congregation was organized around 1748. Pastors: Wilhelm Otterbein, Rev. Rudsil. In 1835, it was detached from the Shrewsbury Charge but was re-added in 1862 and detached again in 1870. Pastors: William Vanderslool 1835-1862, Daniel Gring 1862-1866, Reinhart Smith 1866-1875 and H. Rauhausen. Frey's congregation was organized in 1771 and became detached from the Shrewsbury Charge around 1850. Pastors: William Vanderslool, William A Good, David Bosler, R. Smith, Rev. Rauhauser, E.G. Williams, A Warner 1882--1894, W.H. Loose 1894-1895, P. Kehl 1895-1900, J.K. McKee 1901-1906, R.S. Edris 1906-1910. Stehle's congregation was organized in 1784 and was detached from the Charge in 1845-1850. Stabley's congregation, also called Lebanon Church, was organized in 1814 and was detached from the Shrewsbury Charge in 1880. Bethany Church was organized in 1884 and closed in late 1969. The church merged with Bethlehem (Steltz's) R.D. 3 in Glen Rock, Pa under pastorate of William Sherman. St. John's (Sadler's)Church, Hopewell, Pa was organized in 1901 as the Saxton-Hopewell Charge. The union with the Lutherans was dissolved in June 1963. Pastors: Arthur C. Thompson 1901-1903, Charles Althouse 1904-1907, Paul B. Rupp 1908-1911, Arthur C. Ohl 1911-1914, J.F. Reimers 1915-1916, George A Baer 1916-1921, Lawrence C Miller 1921-1925, Loy C. Gobrecht 1925-1929, Norman S. Greenawalt 1929-1944, Arthur C. Thompson 1945-1950, Thomas M. Burns 1950-1952, Amos Seldomridge 1952-1955, LaMar Bender 1956-1959, Homer F Yearick 1960-1963. St. Paul's UCC (Shrewsbury, Pa) was organized around 1822 and was originally a member of the Shrewsbury charge. Reformed and Lutheran congregations shared the church building until around 1877. Until 1925, this congregation was called Solomon's Church. Pastors: Henry N.B.
