Biographical / Historical

St. John's Church, Canal Dover, Ohio, records of 1846-1902. This town is now called Dover. Some suggest this church was organized 1830 or 1834. It was incorporated as a Reformed Church in 1837, but reorganized as an Evangelical Church in 1838, and is usually considered an Evangelical Church, and now UCC. Another Reformed church organized in 1853 merged to this church in 1862, but that is not mentioned in this book. [One of the interesting things in this book is that on the death record, people who were born in Europe have the place hey came from identified. It is interesting to see that people came from Lutheran areas (like Wuertemberg (although this Lutheran area trained many of its pastors and missionaries in Reformed Basel), newly merged Evangelical areas like Prussia and Baden), Reformed areas (like Switzerland), and areas that could be Lutheran or Reformed (such as Alsace).] Pastors: Henry Coloredo 1838-1846 August Steiner 1846-1854 John Gottlieb Abele 1854-1856 Philip Schaefer 1856-1865 Herman Wettel 1865-1866 Henry A. Eppens Sr. 1866-1871 Henry A. Eppens Jr. 1871-1884 Otto Papsdorf 1884-1887 Herman C. M. Hildebrant 1887-1892 Daniel J. Helmkamp 1892-
