Biographical / Historical

First Reformed Church of Reading began as a log structure at what would become Reed and Washington Streets in 1753. A stone church was built in 1761. All the furnishings were hand carved walnut. In 1831 the church was rebuilt of brick with many renovations and enlargements in the years since. The educational program began in 1758. Their own Sunday School was organized in 1840. All preaching and teaching was done in the German language until 1842 when Rev. Bucher began preaching in English on alternate Sundays. First Reformed is the oldest Reformed Church in Reading. During the Revolutionary War, the church was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. Several congregants served as Colonels during the Revolution: Henry Haller, Joseph Heister, Nicholas Lotz, George Nagle and Captain jacob Bower, Peter Nagle and Daniel Rose. Colonel Heister later served 14 years in Congress and one term as Governor of Pennsylvania. Rev. Phillip Jacob Michael from Germany was the first pastor. Twenty one parishioners entered the Christian ministry. Miss Emma Ziemer served as a missionary for 11 years in Yochow City, China. A school was named for her and her grave is adorned annually in her memory.
