Biographical / Historical

Rev. Weber was the son of John and Sophia (Snyder) Weber, born near Millersburg in Berks County, Pa, on November 18, 1851. He was baptized by Rev. T. Leinbach, Sr., in Salem Church. Rev. Weber was the oldest of 15 children, worked on the farm and attended public school until he was 17 years old, then was clerk in a general store for 2 years. On May 9, 1868, he was confirmed as a member of Salem Church. In 1870, when after having been a student for a short while in the Keystone State Normal School at Kutztown, and having received a teaching certificate, he taught school for 5 years in his home community (1870-1875). He entered Palatinate College in 1875. After 3 years, he entered the Junior Class in Franklin and Marshall College in 1878, graduating in 1880. He graduated from the Theological Seminary at Lancaster in 1883, and was licensed by Lebanon Classis on May 28, 1883. His entire ministerial career, with the exception of one year, was spent in Maryland. He was ordained by Maryland Classis on July 1, 1883. Pastorates included: Westminster Charge, Md (1883-1887) and Faith Reformed Church, Baltimore (1887-1923). Between these two pastorates, he briefly served as the President of Wichita University, Wichita, Kansas (1887). He died at his home in Baltimore, on October 1, 1935, at the age of 83. He is buried in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore. In 1904 Mr. Weber was a delegate to the World Convention of the Alliance of Reformed Churches at Liverpool, England. For many years he was a member of the Board of Trustees of Franklin and Marshall College. He was a member of the Board of Visitors of the Theological Seminary at Lancaster from 1920-1924, and President of the Board in 1924. He was President of the Synod of the Potomac, and in 1895 and 1917 was elected President of Maryland Classis. At the organization of Baltimore-Washington Classis in January, 1926, Mr. Weber was elected its first President. He authored 71 articles published in the Messenger, and 33 in the Reformed Church Review. On October 7, 1891, he married Miss Lora Jefferson, at Cambridge, Ohio. They had one son and two daughters. In 1901 Franklin and Marshall College conferred upon Mr. Weber the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. Source: "Fathers of the Reformed Church" vol. 11, pg. 370.
