Biographical / Historical
David W. Kerr was born February 6, 1864, in Marsh Run, Perry County, PA. He received his early education in the public school at Landisburg and in the Irving school near Ickesburg. He graduated in 1886 from Shippensburg State Normal School in which he taught for two years. He attended Mercersburg College from 1888-1890 then entered the Lancaster Theological Seminary and graduated in 1893. He was licensed by the Clarion Classis in May of 1893 and was ordained in June of that same year. In 1893 he was installed as pastor of the Redbank Charge which consisted of four congregations residing at Worthville, PA. During his pastorate here in this rural area a new church was erected at Belknap. From there he served the Grove City, PA charge from 1900-1902 and then from 1902-1905 he served the New Hamburg, PA charge. In 1905 he became pastor of the Mission Congregation (First Church) in Apollo, PA. While at Apollo, he served as the co-publisher and co-editor of a Prohibition weekly paper. Mr. Kerr was then pastor at the Federated Church in Fayette, NY, from 1914-1921 and from 1921-1924 he served the Orangeville, PA charge. Finally, he became pastor of the Community Church Tyringham, MA which included members of the Congregational, Baptist and Methodist church.. He married the former Miss Sue McCune of Mercersburg in November of 1899. She died at Apollo in 1910. He retired in 1927 and moved to Bloomsburg, PA to live with his sister. He enjoyed stamp collecting and cultivating dahlias. He died May 24, 1941 in Bloomsburg, PA at the age of 77 years. He was buried in the cemetery at Mercersburg, PA.
