Biographical / Historical

George Omwake was born on July 13, 1871 near Greencastle, PA. He was the son of Henry and Eveline Beaver Omwake. He attended a country school and Greencastle High School. He graduated from Shippensburg State Normal School, Mercersburg Academy, Ursinus and Yale Divinity School. He earned his bachelor of Divinity at Yale but was never ordained in the ministry. In 1913 he succeeded Dr. A. W. Keigwin as president of Ursinus and held the faculty post of professor of the history and philosophy of education. Dr. Omwake had been Dean of the school in 1903 and vice president in 1909. In 1918 he was president of the Association of College Presidents of Pennsylvania and later served as secretary. He was married in 1906 to the former Sophie Hendricks Casselberry and had a son Stanley and a daughter Eveline. He died February 3, 1937 at his home in Collegeville, PA.
