Biographical / Historical

Charles Freeman was born on November 16, 1887 at Weissport, Pennsylvania. His father was Joseph Frederick Freeman and his mother was Eliza Ann Fletcher. He attended public schools in the communities were his father served and a few years at Temple College in Philadelphia. He graduated from the Theological Seminary in 1905 and was licensed by Goshenhoppen Classis and ordained by the Lehigh Classis that same year. His first charge was Summit Hill, Pennsylvania, where he stayed until 1911. He then accepted a call to Shepherdstown West Virginia, where he married Mary Alice Billmyer. They had no children. In 1913 he became pastor at Hamburg, Pennsylvania, where he stayed until the summer of 1919 and then went to Doylestown. In 1945, Franklin and Marshall conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He retired in 1952 and enjoyed the winter months in St. Petersburg, Florida with his wife. He died at Doylestown February 25, 1956 at the age of 77 years.
