Biographical / Historical

Frederick Emil Luchs was born to Mr. and Mrs. Simon Luchs, the youngest of 12 children. He attended Franklin and Marshall College, joining the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, graduating in 1927. He attended Lancaster Theological Seminary, graduating in 1931. Rev. Luchs first parish was in Knox, Pennsylvania in the Reformed Church of the U.S. a two church parish in Clarion County (1931-1935). From 1935-1937, Rev. Luchs studied at University of Chicago. His next parish was at a Presbyterian Church in Athens, Ohio (1937-1951). The Luchs family next lived in Los Alamos, New Mexico from 1951-1953. From 1953 to 1958, Rev. Luchs ministered to First Congregation Church in Evanston, Illinois. He had a ship chaplaincy on the Home SS Lines, for two weeks from 1961-1973. In 1958, Rev. Luchs accepted a call to Ann Arbor, University of Michigan. Rev. Luchs began a pastorate at First Presbyterian Church of Rochester, New York from 1964-1966. He pastored University congregations from 1937 to the end of his active ministry in 1966: Ohio University; Los Alamos; Northwestern University; and University of Michigan. In August 1933, he married Evelyn Coulter. On October 13, 1943, they adopted four children, one of whom passed away after college.
