Biographical / Historical
Samuel Marsteller Roeder was born April 27, 1851 at Hosensack, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, the youngest of ten children of Daniel C. and Catherine Marsteller Roeder. He was educated at Freeland Seminary and the Academy of Ursinus College. After teaching a year he entered Franklin & Marshall College from which he graduated in 1875. In 1878 he graduated from the Theological Seminary at Lancaster. He was licensed June 19, 1878 in Boyertown, PA. by Goshenhoppen Classis and ordained August 25, 1878 in Centre Hall, PA. by West Susquehanna Classis, both Classes of Eastern Synod. He was installed as pastor of Centre Hall Charge where he remained for 6 years. Then he served Elizabethtown, Lancaster County 9 years; Manchester, Maryland 13 years; and Glen Rock Charge, York County, PA. for 26 years. He retired in 1932 and moved to Lancaster. In 1881 he married Mary R. Groh. When he died July 7, 1936 he was survived by his wife, six daughters and one son.
