Biographical / Historical
John van Ramstein Kooken was born in Northampton County, PA Dec. 20, 1815. After completing his studies at Mercersburg he was licensed and ordained by Susquehanna Classis in 1841. His first pastorate was in Dauphin County and lasted two years. He then went to Grindstone Hill Charge in Franklin County until the fall of 1844. His next pastorate was at Trappe, Montgomery County, PA, from 1844 to 1846. In a1847 he went to Norristown, where he founded the Elmwood Institute and the Reformed Church of the Ascension. He remained there until 1852, then served as principal at Mercersburg from 1854 to 1857. In 1857 he was appointed United States Consul at Trinidad, Cuba, where he remained until the Civil War broke out in 1862. He returned and became Captain of the 110th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was killed in the battle of Fredericksburg, VA Dec. 14, 1862. While at Trappe he married Mary C. Prizer and they had six children.
