Biographical / Historical
The Back Bay Mission was organized by the Rev. George Hoffman as a service to the families of local fisherman and seafood workers. It began with a Sunday School and church program, and a clinic was added in 1929. In 1956 the Back Bay Church was organized, allowing the mission to reach the goal of providing: an organized congregation; Christian Education; Social Services (welfare and medical). The Mission originally operated under the auspices of the Board of National Missions of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and now operates under the UCC Board for Homeland Ministries.
